The Center for Screen Time Awareness has designated this week as National Turn Off Week. They are asking all of us to make an earnest effort to power down our screens and tune back in to our lives.  I read an article yesterday in NYT Magazine by Virginia Heffernan about Twitter and how it may very well be a time-suck trap and could very well be contributing to an intelligence divide - really heady and insightful articlet. These two moments have created a perfect storm for me and my family to agree to UNPLUG (kinda) this week.

Our UNPLUGGED commitment: this week my family and I will make an earnest and honest effort to not focus on the electronic “hearths” that proliferate our lives. We will return the focus on creating our own memories and moments. We agree that technology should enhance our human experience and not replace human interaction. We can’t go “full monty” technology disconnect because “I gotta make the doughnuts” this week. So, we will be unplugged for extended periods of time this week. As soon as I complete this post and one tweet, we will go UNPLUGGED. The plan is to power-up screens (of any kind) in our home only three times per/day for 30 minutes the rest of the week - 8am, Noon and 4pm (note: my wife negotiated one stipulation in our commitment…she refused to DVR Heroes or Medium and wait a week to see this week’s episodes!)

Our Goals:
less tweets. more meet + greets. less btws + omgs. more hellos, goodbyes, hugs + smiles. less screen time. more fam’ time. more live + in-person. less on-line + impersonal. more books. less blog. less Sports Center. more human-centered. more PLAY. less posts. more cello. less “ambient awareness”. more being “present”. less CRT time. more double word score, get-outta-jail-free, UNO, check + king me!
