“What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility - a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.”
- From the Inauguration Speech of President Barack Obama

I’ve been fortunate to assist many organizations from around the globe that use sport to impact their communities in a positive and meaningful way. One of the organizations that I support is Street Soccer USA/SSUSA. SSUSA’s phenomenal team and their efforts were just featured in People Magazine and are planning an important fund raising event on January 27th in DC. If your travels take you to our nation’s capital on the 27th, or you reside in the DC area, try to make it to the event - Lawrence Cann + the SSUSA team would appreciate you giving a little LUV to their sport for social change effort.

As many of you know from my having mentioned it here and on my ESPN blog, “Kicking It” is a film about the 2006 Homeless World Cup“The film chronicles one of the most unique sporting events, the 4th Annual Homeless World Cup, where 500 homeless soccer players from 48 nations traveled to Cape Town, South Africa to represent their countries. The players have been knocked down by life, hailing from such disparate parts of the world as war torn Afghanistan, the slums of Kenya, the drug rehab clinics of Dublin, Ireland, the streets of Charlotte, North Carolina, the overflowing public shelters of Madrid, Spain, and the unforgiving city of St. Petersburg, Russia, where the homeless have no rights or identity.”

This is a powerful, beautiful film and it demonstrates the power of sport to change lives.

Kicking It airs on ESPN2 this week, Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 6PM and Wed. Sept 10 at 7PM.  Check your local listings to make sure those times apply in your time zone…and enjoy!

And this just in from our friend, Jeremy Goldberg XD of Global Youth Partnership for Africa:

“The Homeless World Cup has confirmed the Global Youth Partnership for Africa’s “Team Gomo Tong” participation in the 2008 Homeless World Cup in Melbourne, Australia. Team Gomo Tong will participate in the first ever: “Female Homeless World Cup.”

Team Gomo Tong will organize a team of seven young women with the objective to both bring the cup to Uganda, but also to develop new relationships and friendships with players from around the world.

The 1st Female Homeless World Cup will feature teams from: Cameroon, Colombia, Kyrgz Republic, Ivory Coast, Philipines, Paraguay and Zambia.

As part of our Girls Kick It! program, GYPA will commence recruitment, education, training and futbol practice by this Summer 2008.”

Having seen some of the women of Team Gomo Tong play - they’ve got a good shot.  If you want to support Team Gomo Tong 2008, go here and do what you can.
