MELBOURNE 2008 HOMELESS WORLD CUP COUNTDOWN BEGINS

• 100 days until the Melbourne 2008 Homeless World Cup
• 56 nations make Melbourne 2008 the biggest Homeless World Cup ever
• Women’s Cup is a first in Homeless World Cup history
• Legacy of 30 street soccer programs rolled out across Australia
• National ambassadors unveiled

In just under 100 days, Melbourne’s Federation Square and Birrarung Marr will come alive with the grit, spirit and glory of one of the world’s most unique international sporting events – the Melbourne 2008 Homeless World Cup.

From December 1-7, 2008, 56 nations will unite in Melbourne for the biggest Homeless World Cup tournament ever, including the first Women’s Cup.

Women are making strides this year on many fronts and here’s another first: the Homeless World Cup is having its first ever Women’s Cup!  Women have always been a part of the Cup,but rarely did they get the playing time.  They would sit on the sideline and every now and then, if the game was a rout, a woman would get in at garbage time.  No more.  The women of the Homeless World Cup have their own thing this year and the spotlight, now, will shine firmly on them.  And one thing I can tell you from experience: these women can PLAY!

From the Right to Play website:

OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST NATALIE COUGHLIN MAKES HER MEDAL COUNT

$20,000 Donation to Right To Play Made Through Hearts Of Gold Program

BEIJING, CHINA (August 12, 2008) – The Olympic gold medal Natalie Coughlin won today for the Women’s 100m backstroke at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games will have a longstanding impact not only for Team U.S.A., but for children in need throughout the world. Through the Johnson & Johnson Hearts of Gold program, the Company will make a $20,000 donation on behalf of Coughlin to international humanitarian organization Right To Play.

When given a platform as large as the Olympics, the temptation for the young athlete may be to focus on self, on me and my accomplishments.  This is completely understandable.  And then there are those players who are able to step back from the boozy glow of success and find a way to share their success’s reward.  Right to Play is an organization that helps world class athletes share their success with youth living in dire circumstances all over the globe.

‘Red Rubber Ball’ Bounces into Youth Market

What is it that excites you, makes you smile and fuels your dreams? This is the question author Kevin Carroll urges children to contemplate in his new inspirational workbook, What’s Your Red Rubber Ball?!: Discover Your Inspiration and Chase It for a Lifetime, co-published by Disney Press and ESPN Books. The book, which contains fold-outs, journal pages and self-discovery activities and features red rubber texturing on its cover, lands this month with a 100,000-copy first printing.

The genesis of the title is an actual ball that Carroll played with as a boy, which helped him discover his athletic ability and a passion for sports. That ball fueled Carroll’s personal and professional dreams and, he insists, “it saved my life.” Born in a Philadelphia suburb in 1958, he, along with his two brothers, moved in with their grandparents after their parents abandoned them. The local playground became what he calls “my sanctuary—a magical environment where my worries, shame and low self-esteem disappeared.”

During 10 years of active duty in the Air Force, Carroll spent a good deal of time playing soccer. He went on to study sports medicine and worked as an athletic trainer for high school and college athletic teams, eventually becoming the head trainer for the Philadelphia 76ers. He then went to work for Nike, where he was responsible for inspiring employees. “It was my job to push their creativity and potential to the limit,” he says.

Carroll first delivered his motivational message—to identify what it is that inspires you and pursue it throughout your life—on the page in Rules of the Red Rubber Ball: Find and Sustain Your Life’s Work, which he self-published in 2004. He brought copies to speaking engagements, including those he conducted in conjunction with ESPN. “A copy of the book landed on the desk of Sandy DeShong at ESPN Books, which was just starting up,” the author explains, and they negotiated a book deal soon after. Released in 2005, the ESPN Books edition has more than 120,000 copies in print…

From the Schoolhouse Blog, online resource for the Texas Elementary Principals & Supervisors Association:

TEAM TEPSA…in the Game for Kids!

“Live each waking moment as if it might be a ‘teachable moment’, a chance to expand your mind and strengthen your abilities.” ~Kevin Carroll, Rules of the Red Rubber Ball

TEPSA volunteer leaders gathered this month to discuss ideas for the association and learn new ways to energize school leaders at the local level. One idea that was shared was having teachers read “Rules of the Red Rubber Ball” by Kevin Carroll as an inspirational book study when the school year begins.

It’s always validating when people read Rules of the Red Rubber Ball and find something in it that resonates with them; to have it considered for use as a teaching tool or book study text is icing on the cake.  Thank you for your shoutout and know that it inspires me to dig more deeply and put out more material that will have even greater impact.  Speaking of which: Stay Tuned for a BIG announcement along those lines!!

From the Christopher Scott blog:

Make it Fun!

One of my favorite presenters from this year’s Maximum Impact Simulcast (MIS) was Kevin Carroll. Mr. Carroll presented a great idea to have Olympic themed “game days” at organizations as a way to boost creativity and encourage play at work.

At our local United Way we already have Game Days once a month, so our COO and I worked together to create the United Way “Unique” Olympics. Below are some pictures of month one, from our three month long United Way “Unique” Olympics. I’m not in any of the pictures because I was holding the Camera (thanks Jason), but my teammate and I are in first place. Our team name is “Go for the Gold!”

Thanks for the shoutout, Christopher and good luck to team “Go for the Gold.”  Look for more United Way-Olympic pictures in our Flickr slide show (right margin) very soon.
