"88 Bikes provides a simple and direct opportunity to make a difference for a young person in the world: buy a child a bike! In 2006, more than 105 people participated in our small campaign to buy 88 bikes for the 88 kids at the Palm Tree Orphanage in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This year, we are raising money for kids in Uganda."My man, Jeremy Goldberg, director of the Global Youth Partnership for Africa an organization we've collaborated with now for three years on various projects (i.e. the Homeless World Cup), has partnered with Jared and Dan Austin of 88 Bikes in the Uganda effort. As these social change provocateurs tell it:
"THE GOAL: 200 Bikes for kids at the Patongo School and in the nearby villages, Uganda. Each bike, and each donation, is 88 dollars. THE KIDS: Orphans, refugees, former child soldiers, and street children ranging in age from 5-17. UPKEEP: Several of the children will get training in bike repair and mechanics, teaching the other kids how to fix their bikes."For great background info on the Ugandan youth, check out the film "War/Dance," by Sean and Andrea Fine, two other associates of 88 Bikes.
